Features:
  • When we set out to make the best value in starter packages in the fly fishing industry we looked around at the competition. We didn't find another starter package out there that had everything that ours has. A 4-piece 9 foot rod, a large arbor reel with drag, preinstalled line, backing and leader, a rod sock, a rod case, a fly box, three flies and a Lifetime Rod Warranty!
  • Not only do you get more but you don't have to pay for our name and you get a rod that is specifically made for learning how to fly cast.
  • Don't mistake this for anything less than a great rod. The rod is a slow action, mid flex design for making learning to cast easier. This rod has many of the same details as our HX Series rods.
  • The case holds everything that is included in the package. A convenient zippered storage pouch on the side of the case keeps your flies and accessories from getting lost.
  • Experienced fly casters and instructors who have tried this rod love it. You are likely to love it too!

5 out of 5 stars Great value   January 30, 2009

I just got my combo today and I'm very happy with it. I needed to replace a rod that I broke and I didn't want to spend a lot. I chose Wild Water because of the price and the warranty. The shipping was free and super fast (UPS to Hawaii) which was great. Looks wise the rod is very basic, black wraps on dark grey, single stripping guide. Shiny metal (steel?) reel seat is a nice touch though. The reel is also very entry level but it's large arbor entry level which is nice. I took the setup out on a small stream for smallmouth and the thing was like butta. The casting was smooth and almost effortless. Full disclosure: I don't own any high end rods so I can't tell you "Casts better than my Winston (Loomis, Orvis, Sage, whatever)" but it sure casts better than my previous rod which was part of a Cabelas starter kit. The fly was going where I wanted it way more often than I'm used to. The slow action on this rod is said to be good for beginners, so I'll use this one to teach my sons to fly cast. I ordered a med/fast action for bigger water and windier days. I got both this combo and the 2nd rod for less than I was going to spend on just a starter rod/reel combo from a better known company. The 4 piece design is great for travel and the included case is solid. I know I've only had the stuff for a day, but it was a good day. I caught (and released) 6 bass including the 2 biggest I've ever got out of that particular stream. This outfit is a great place to start for a first timer, a great place to continue for kinda broke guys like me, and a can't-go-wrong backup for anyone else.

I didn't want to spend more than a $100 for a portable fly rod & reel, so after researching, I selected the Wild Water Fly Fishing Complete Black Starter HX6-090-4 package. Good quality rod, reel, and case. The storage case also includes a small zippered side pocket for fly box storage. Great for hiking. Received excellent service from both Amazon and Wild Water. Fast shipping. Very satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars great fly rig for beginner!   August 8, 2009

i'm new to fly fishing so i took a 2-hour lesson with a professional guide and decided to not rush into the fly fishing shop to hand over my monthly mortgage payment for all the 'stuff' you 'need.'
did some online research and found lots of good reviews for Wild Water as a company and for this combo kit specifically. took it with me on a family vacation in VT where they had a two catch&release ponds stocked with trout (i think i scared the fish with all my practicing, which was ok in my book since just the casting alone was fun). very compact size with a sturdy case makes this ideal for travel by car or plane. appreciate the 3 flies that came with it as well as the spooled up reel. overall, i've used it more than a dozen times in less than 3 weeks and i'm loving the experience. free shipping and no tax is always an Amazon best bet!

5 out of 5 stars Great beginner kit; invest in a few other items   January 11, 2010

I'm the biggest skeptic there is about "beginner" kits of anything. This one exceeded my expectations. Sure, you're paying more for this rod and reel than you would a $50 cheap-o at Bass Pro, but you get a good quality rod, a decent reel, and it's all ready to go. The rod has good action...it's pretty whippy, so it takes time to get your cast down. Practice with it for a couple weeks and you'll be in great shape. Note that the "warranty" isn't a "break your rod, send it in, get a new one for free" type...you have to pay something like $30 for a new rod. It's still better than buying a new one at an outfitter, though.

The case is nice, and it gives you a little peace of mind when throwing the thing in your trunk.

If you're new to fly fishing like me, I suggest you get a few things in addition to this rod and reel.

1) a fly box...you can get one from bass pro for $10 to $15 and they're really nice to have

2) additional flies and floatant...you get three flies with this kit and they're pretty pathetic quality.

3) additional tippet and a couple leaders. If you're like me, you'll get knots in your tippet and leaders, so it's good to have back up when you just can't get those knots out!

4) a beginner's book about knot tying (or watch some online videos...tons of good instruction on YouTube)

5) a hat that protects your ears; also get sunglasses that cover your eyes well

5 out of 5 stars Great for travelers who don't want to break the bank   August 28, 2009

I travel a lot and I'm a beginner fly fisherman. I didn't want to break the bank and this medium action 4 piece was perfect for travel. I can even leave the line on and put the real in the case, a HUGE benefit for me. I haven't caught a fish on it yet (i know sad) but I don't feel like a complete idiot when I whip it out around experienced fly fisher buddies of mine.
